Tourism Tax Hits Record High in Orange County
Orange County's tourist development tax revenue reached an all-time high this year, but growth remained stagnant compared to 2022. The revenue hit $358.2 million, a marginal increase from last year's $358.1 million. While the record figure underscores resilience following the uncertainty of the pandemic, city and county leaders expressed disappointment over the lack of significant growth.
"I'm glad to see the numbers stayed strong … they just didn't grow at all from last year … it was almost flat," said Orange County Comptroller Phil Diamond.
Diamond pointed to several possible reasons for the plateau. One key factor is that many tourists who visited Central Florida last year opted to explore different destinations this year.
"I think a lot of people who wanted to travel … traveled, and they didn't necessarily want to [go to] Orange County again," Diamond explained.
Another potential reason for the slowdown is that visitors may be delaying trips to Orlando in anticipation of Universal's Epic Universe, a highly anticipated new theme park slated to open next year.
"This is the first new theme park in Orlando in two decades," said Thair White, a blogger and theme park expert. "But Epic Universe is going to be positive for everybody in Orlando and Florida as a whole."
The new park is expected to generate a significant financial boost, with officials and local businesses eagerly awaiting its opening. Universal Orlando Resort is set to unveil its newest theme park, Universal Epic Universe, on May 22, 2025. This addition marks the resort's fourth park, joining Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, and Universal's Volcano Bay.
Spanning approximately 750 acres, Epic Universe is designed to offer immersive experiences across five distinct themed lands:
Celestial Park: Serving as the central hub, this area features lush gardens, waterways, and architecture inspired by astronomical and mythological themes. Attractions include the Constellation Carousel and the dueling roller coaster, Stardust Racers.
Super Nintendo World: Guests can step into the vibrant universe of Nintendo characters like Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, featuring interactive attractions and themed dining.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic: This land blends 1920s wizarding Paris from the "Fantastic Beasts" films with the iconic British Ministry of Magic, offering a new era of the wizarding world.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk: Based on the popular film franchise, this area allows guests to explore a world where Vikings and dragons coexist, featuring themed attractions and experiences.
Dark Universe: Centered around Universal's classic monsters, this land offers a gothic ambiance where guests can explore Dr. Victoria Frankenstein's experiments and other legendary creatures.
In addition to the themed lands, Epic Universe will introduce new dining, shopping, and entertainment options, as well as the Universal Helios Grand Hotel, providing guests with convenient access to the park.
Ticket sales and vacation packages, including access to Epic Universe, became available on October 22, 2024. Guests can choose from various multi-day ticket options that provide access to Universal's existing parks and a separate day admission to Epic Universe.
With its expansive offerings and immersive environments, Universal Epic Universe aims to set a new standard in theme park entertainment, providing guests with unparalleled experiences that cater to a wide range of interests.
Additionally, experts point out that part of the record tax revenue can be attributed to rising prices across the hospitality sector. Many businesses, including hotels, theme parks, and restaurants, have increased their rates, contributing to the higher tax collections despite flat visitor numbers.
As the county prepares for the impact of Epic Universe and evaluates its tourism strategies, maintaining strong numbers and fostering new growth remain a priority for local leaders.
